Having a personal trainer has worked for many people I know. My aunt, a retired healthcare researcher and MD, hired one a few years ago, before I became a personal trainer myself. I watched my aunt go from Zumba at home to finally becoming comfortable working out at the gym. She wanted to lose weight, meet people, and become active. She didn’t know about smart goals or how to get started.

My aunt became one of my mentors and she encouraged me to get started dancing to get energized and be active. We started by walking together during the day and danced at night at her dance studio. She also introduced me to her cardio class from the local park district.

 I had started attending classes learning about nutrition when I was in nursing school but did not put it to use until I decided to take care of myself. Back then I was always tired and did not have the strength to hang out with friends and family. I was either at school, studying at the library, at work, or caring for our household of 6, including myself.

It took others to help me get started on my health and wellness journey. I’ve mentioned in my previous article that my husband and my four grown children helped me get started, motivated me, and eventually became a way of life for all of us. Weekends filled with hiking, gardening, and working on projects around our home became very fun activities! We even managed to incorporate movement while on vacations by choosing places like Death Valley, Estes Park, Zion National Park, and Shawnee National Forest, just to name a few that we visited over the years.
